Troubleshooting the ITD

If the device fills with fluid:*

  • Take BSI precautions
  • Remove ITD from airway adjunct
  • Shake ITD or blow out debris using ventilation source
  • Replace ITD after removing fluid (unless local practice dictates otherwise)
  • Discontinue use if ITD fills with fluid twice or cannot be cleared

* Follow local protocol if different.

If the ventilation timing lights fail to operate or blink at a rate other than 10 per minute then turn off the lights and ventilate the patient at the proper rate. Note that timing light function is independent of the functioning of the valve inside the ITD.

Discontinue use of an ITD if:

  • Chest does not rise with ventilation
  • Device appears to malfunction in any way that prevents proper ventilation
