ET Tubes

When using an ITD with an endotracheal tube or advanced airway, the ventilation rate should match the flashes of the timing lights which is 10 times per minute. Deliver each breath with a one-second inspiration, enough to see the chest rise.

If EMS personnel need to give medications via the ET tube: remove ITD, inject the medications and then re-insert the ITD.

End-tidal CO2 Monitoring

When using an ITD with an end-tidal CO2 monitoring device, place the ETCO2 sensor between the ventilation source and the ITD. There is a potential for air leakage when the end-tidal CO2 sensor is placed below the ITD.

If a filter is used, place it after the ITD unless local practice dictates otherwise.
