  • Do not resuscitate (DNR) orders
  • Blunt or penetrating trauma*
  • Burns
  • Obvious death (and no resuscitation attempted)
  • Known prisoners
  • Known or suspected pregnancy

*Strangulation, electrocution and submersion are not exclusion criteria.

Exclude patients from Analyze Early and Analyze Late if:

  • EMS witnesses the arrest (shock immediately)
  • Rhythm analyzed by a non-EMS provider (e.g., law enforcement, layperson, etc.)
  • Non-ROC unit is at scene and has started CPR or attached a defibrillator**

**A non-ROC unit is an EMS or fire agency that is not participating the ROC PRIMED Trial.

DO NOT use an ITD if:

  • Patient has a tracheostomy
  • Mechanical CPR device is used

Patient 1

  • 32-year-old male
  • Gunshot wound to head
  • Unconscious and unresponsive
  • No pulse
  • ROC EMS providers started CPR on arrival

This patient would be excluded due to arrest caused by traumatic injury.

Patient 2

  • 88-year-old female
  • Found at home in bed unconscious and unresponsive
  • No pulse
  • ROC EMS providers started CPR on arrival

This patient would be included in the trial because she meets the inclusion criteria and none of the exclusion criteria are present.
