Effective CPR

You can remember the key aspects of effective CPR with the letters DVD-R. They stand for depth, ventilations, decompression and rate of compression.

Depth

  • Compress chest wall a full 1½ to 2 inches
  • More in large patients

Ventilations

  • 1 second duration
  • Enough volume to make the chest rise
  • 8-10/min with advanced airway

Decompression

  • Allow complete decompression (recoil) of the chest after each compression

Rate of compression

  • 100 compressions per minute
  • Limit interruptions of chest compressions to no more than 10 seconds
